Ground Plane Interactions in Electromagnetic Compatibility Component Testing

The automotive industry has increased reliance on electronics technology and wireless communication systems and the demand for these systems is still increasing. With this demand there is a need to ensure these systems do not interfere with each other in a way which may cause system performance degradation or even failure. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is a discipline that deals with interaction between electronic and wireless systems. During EMC testing the device under test (DUT) is isolated from the surrounding environment to facilitate measurement of the component’s electromagnetic characteristics. Geometric aspects of an EMC test setup may impact test results without the knowledge of the test engineer. In this paper, electromagnetic simulation and measurement results will show the impact of one of the least obvious but most often experienced issues in an EMC setup - grounding.

The Particulate Matter Index (PMI) is a tool that provides an indication of a fuel’s tendency to produce Particulate Matter (PM) emissions. Currently, the index is being used by various fuel laboratories and the Automotive OEMs as a tool to understand the gasoline fuel’s impact on both PM from engine hardware and vehicle-out emissions. In addition, a newer index that could be used to give an indication of the PM tendency of the gasoline range fuels, called the Particulate Evaluation Index (PEI), is shown to have a good correlation to PMI. The data used in those indices are collected from chemical analytical methods. This paper will compare gas chromatography (GC) methods used by three laboratories and discuss how the different techniques may affect the PMI and PEI calculation.

Considerations for Verification of Vehicle Occupant Magnetic Field Protection

Hybrid and electric vehicles utilize high power electric motors to propel the vehicle requiring a significant level of electric current to travel between various modules such as energy storage devices, power inverter modules, energy charging modules, and the motors themselves. This electric current creates magnetic fields around the devices themselves and wiring that delivers this current between devices within the vehicle. These devices and wiring exist throughout the vehicle and can even exist near vehicle occupants, which has prompted investigations looking into the short term biological effect these non-ionizing fields can have on the human body. The findings from these investigations have been published by organizations such as the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), and some nations have passed laws regulating the magnetic and electric field exposure to vehicle occupants.

Driving Automation System Test Scenario Development Process Creation and Software-in-the-Loop Implementation

Automated driving systems (ADS) are one of the key modern technologies that are changing the way we perceive mobility and transportation. In addition to providing significant access to mobility, they can also be useful in decreasing the number of road accidents. For these benefits to be realized, candidate ADS need to be proven as safe, robust, and reliable; both by design and in the performance of navigating their operational design domain (ODD). This paper proposes a multi-pronged approach to evaluate the safety performance of a hypothetical candidate system. Safety performance is assessed through using a set of test cases/scenarios that provide substantial coverage of those potentially encountered in an ODD. This systematic process is used to create a library of scenarios, specific to a defined domain. Beginning with a system-specific ODD definition, a set of core competencies are identified.

Arc brazing welding (ABW) is widely used in automotive vehicle body and chassis structure along with Arc welding - MIG (Metal Inert Gas) or TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) and spot welds. MIG welding or ABW (Arc Brazing welding) fracture in vehicle development process is one of the critical phenomena in quasi static structural simulation, like Roof Strength, Seat/Belt Anchorage and Child Restraint Anchorage (CRS). MIG/ABW Fracture has an impact on structural performance. Advantages of ABW over MIG weld is made at relatively lower temperatures. Significant advantage is welding thin sheet metal, no melting of parent metal and retains significant physical properties. This characteristic of ABW enables selection of ABW against MIG welded joint on automotive thin sheet metals. Good ABW joint can be as strong or stronger than MIG welded joint. Joint efficiency (JE) is defined as the ratio between the fracture strength of the joint and the fracture strength of parent metal.

Tanker Truck Rollover Avoidance Using Learning Reference Governor

Tanker trucks are commonly used for transporting liquid material including chemical and petroleum products. On the one hand, tanker trucks are susceptible to rollover accidents due to the high center of gravity when they are loaded and due to the liquid sloshing effects when the tank is partially filled. On the other hand, tanker truck rollover accidents are among the most dangerous vehicle crashes, frequently resulting in serious to fatal driver injuries and significant property damage, because the liquid cargo is often hazardous and flammable. Therefore, effective schemes for tanker truck rollover avoidance are highly desirable and can bring a considerable amount of societal benefit. Yet, the development of such schemes is challenging, as tanker trucks can operate in various environments and be affected by manufacturing variability, aging, degradation, etc. This paper considers the use of Learning Reference Governor (LRG) for tanker truck rollover avoidance.

Field Data Study of the Effect of Knee Airbags on Lower Extremity Injury in Frontal Crashes

Knee airbags (KABs) are one countermeasure in newer vehicles that could influence lower extremity (LEX) injury, the most frequently injured body region in frontal crashes. To determine the effect of KABs on LEX injury for drivers in frontal crashes, the analysis examined moderate or greater LEX injury (AIS 2+) in two datasets. Logistic regression considered six main effect factors (KAB deployment, BMI, age, sex, belt status, driver compartment intrusion). Eighty-five cases with KAB deployment from the Crash Injury Research and Engineering Network (CIREN) database were supplemented with 8 cases from the International Center for Automotive Medicine (ICAM) database and compared to 289 CIREN non-KAB cases. All cases evaluated drivers in frontal impacts (11 to 1 o’clock Principal Direction of Force) with known belt use in 2004 and newer model year vehicles. Results of the CIREN/ICAM dataset were compared to analysis of a similar dataset from NASS-CDS (5441 total cases, 418 KAB-deployed).

Universal Connectivity in the vehicle is no longer a nice-to-have function, but a critical tool to support every other function of the car - infotainment, active safety, autonomous driving, diagnostics, driving comfort etc. Although CASE (Connectivity, Autonomous, Services, Electrification) is now a commonly accepted foundation of new technology, it should perhaps be more accurately described as “C + ASE”, since Connectivity is an important enabler for the other three. Typically, connectivity in a vehicle implies primarily cellular (terrestrial) communication along with several other wireless protocols such as WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC etc. In addition, emerging vehicular technologies such as autonomous driving would potentially require ubiquitous and highly reliable connectivity.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of the Multiphase Flow and Heat Transfer in an Oil Jet Cooled Engine Piston

The piston temperature has to be carefully controlled to achieve effective and efficient thermal management in the internal combustion engines. One of the common methods to cool piston is by injecting oil from the crankcase underside to the piston under-crown area. In the present study, a novel 3-D multiphase thermal-fluid coupled model was developed using the commercial CFD software SimericsMP+ to study the piston cooling using the oil jet. In this model, an algorithm was proposed to couple the fluid and solid computation domain to account for the different timescale of heat transfer in the fluid and solid due to the high thermal inertia of the solid piston. The heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and reference temperature were mapped to the piston top surface and the liner temperature distribution was also used as the boundary condition. The temperature-dependent material properties, piston motion, and thermal contact resistance between the ring and piston were also accounted for.

Investigation of Fracture Behavior of Deep Drawn Automotive Part affected by Thinning with Shell Finite Elements

In the recent decades, tremendous effort has been made in automotive industry to reduce vehicle mass and development costs for the purpose of improving fuel economy and building safer vehicles that previous generations of vehicles cannot match. An accurate modeling approach of sheet metal fracture behavior under plastic deformation is one of the key parameters affecting optimal vehicle development process. FLD (Forming Limit Diagram) approach, which plays an important role in judging forming severity, has been widely used in forming industry, and localized necking is the dominant mechanism leading to fracture in sheet metal forming and crash events. FLD is limited only to deal with the onset of localized necking and could not predict shear fracture. Therefore, it is essential to develop accurate fracture criteria beyond FLD for vehicle development.

Minimizing Disturbance Detection Time in Hydraulic Systems

In a hydraulic system, parameter variation, contamination, and/or operating conditions can lead to instabilities in the pressure response. The resultant erratic pressure profile reduces performance and can lead to hardware damage. Specifically, in a transmission control system, the inability to track pressure commands can result in clutch or variator slip which can cause driveline disturbance and/or hardware damage. A variator is highly sensitive to slip and therefore, it is advantageous to identify such pressure events quickly and take remedial actions. The challenge is to detect the condition in the least amount of time while minimizing false alarms. A Neyman-Pearson and an energy detector (based on auto-correlation) are evaluated for the detection of pressure disturbances. The performance of the detectors is measured in terms of speed of detection and robustness to measurement noise.

Testing Methods and Recommended Validation Strategies for Active Safety to Optimize Time and Cost Efficiency

Given the current proliferation of active safety features on new vehicles, especially for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Highly Automated Driving (HAD) technologies, it is evident that there is a need for testing methods beyond a vehicle level physical test. This paper will discuss the current state of the art in the industry for simulation-based verification and validation (V&V) testing methods. These will include, but are not limited to, "Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL)", “Software-in-the-Loop (SIL)”, “Model-in-the-Loop (MIL)”, “Driver-in-the-Loop (DIL)”, and any other suitable combinations of the aforementioned (XIL). Aspects of the test processes and needed components for simulation will be addressed, detailing the scope of work needed for various types of testing. The paper will provide an overview of standardized test aspects, active safety software validation methods, recommended practices and standards.

Kriging-Assisted Structural Design for Crashworthiness Applications Using the Extended Hybrid Cellular Automaton (xHCA) Framework

The Hybrid Cellular Automaton (HCA) algorithm is a generative design approach used to synthesize conceptual designs of crashworthy vehicle structures with a target mass. Given the target mass, the HCA algorithm generates a structure with a specific acceleration-displacement profile. The extended HCA (xHCA) algorithm is a generalization of the HCA algorithm that allows to tailor the crash response of the vehicle structure. Given a target mass, the xHCA algorithm has the ability to generate structures with different acceleration-displacement profiles and target a desired crash response. In order to accomplish this task, the xHCA algorithm includes two main components: a set of meta-parameters (in addition target mass) and surrogate model technique that finds the optimal meta-parameter values. This work demonstrates the capabilities of the xHCA algorithm tailoring acceleration and intrusion through the use of one meta-parameter (design time) and the use of Kriging-assisted optimization.

Structural Performance Comparison between 980MPa Generation 3 Steel and Press Hardened Steel Applied in the Body-in-White A and B-Pillar Parts

Commercially available Generation 3 (GEN3) advanced high strength steels (AHSS) have inherent capability of replacing press hardened steels (PHS) using cold stamping processes. 980 GEN3 AHSS is a cold stampable steel with 980 MPa minimum tensile strength that exhibits an excellent combination of formability and strength. Hot forming of PHS requires elevated temperatures (> 800°C) to enable complex deep sections. 980 GEN3 AHSS presents similar formability as 590 DP material, allowing engineers to design complex geometries similar to PHS material; however, its cold formability provides implied potential process cost savings in automotive applications. The increase in post-forming yield strength of GEN3 AHSS due to work and bake hardening contributes strongly toward crash performance in energy absorption and intrusion resistance.

Conjugate Heat Transfer CFD Analysis of an Oil Cooled Automotive Electrical Motor

This study brings to forefront the analysis capability of CFD for the oil-cooling of an Electric-Motor (E-Motor) powering an automobile. With the rapid increase in electrically powered vehicle, there is an increasing need in the CFD modeling community to perform virtual simulations of the E-Motors to determine the viability of the designs and their performance capabilities. The thermal predictions are extremely vital as they have tremendous impact on the design, spacing and sizes of these motors. In this paper, with the Simerics, Inc. software, Simerics-MP+®, a complete three dimensional CFD with conjugate heat transfer CHT model of an Electric Motor, including all the important parts like the windings, rotor and stator laminate, endrings etc. is created. The multiphase Volume of Fluid (VOF) approach is used to model the oil flow inside this motor.

While promised to bring major changes to our lives, there are significant legal challenges that have to be overcome before they can see widespread use. A century’s worth of law and regulation were written with only human drivers in mind, meaning they have to be amended before machines can take the wheel. Everything from key federal safety regulations down to local parking laws will have to shift in the face of AVs. This report undertakes an examination of the AV laws of Nevada, California, Michigan, and Arizona, along with two failed federal AV bills, to better understand how lawmakers have approached the technology. States have traditionally regulated a great deal of what happens on the road, but does that still make sense in a world with AVs? Would the nascent AV industry be able to survive in a world with fifty potential sets of rules?

Development of a Low Loss Clutch for CVT Reverse Function

Continuously variable transmissions (CVT) provide superior fuel economy by enabling internal combustion engines to operate at their “sweet spots”. However, there is still potential to improve CVT system’s mechanical efficiency, and further enhance vehicle-level fuel economy. In the past, extensive research work has focused on the core continuously variator unit (CVU) that includes pulleys and a belt or chain. Another thread of research has centered on optimization of CVT clamping force control to reduce hydraulic system loss. Nonetheless, to the best of our knowledge, very little research has looked into the planetary gear sets and clutches that enable the CVT system to switch between forward, neutral and reverse gears. The state-of-the-art reverse clutch usually consists of multiple friction and steel plates, and is normally open during all forward driving maneuvers. The relative speed between friction and steel plates is identical to turbine speed, which generate spin loss.

Evaluation of Different ADAS Features in Vehicle Displays

The current study presents the results of an experiment on driver performance including reaction time, eye-attention movement, mental workload, and subjective preference when different features of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) warnings (Forward Collision Warning) are displayed, including different locations (HDD (Head-Down Display) vs HUD (Head-Up Display)), modality of warning (text vs. pictographic), and a new concept that provides a dynamic bird’s eye view for warnings. Sixteen drivers drove a high-fidelity driving simulator integrated with display prototypes of the features. Independent variables were displayed as modality, location, and dynamics of the warnings with driver performance as the dependent variable including driver reaction time to the warning, EORT (Eyes-Off-Road-Time) during braking after receiving the warning, workload and subject preference.

Hazard Cuing Systems for Teen Drivers: A Test-Track Evaluation on Mcity

There is a strong evidence that the overrepresentation of teen drivers in motor vehicle crashes is mainly due to their poor hazard perception skills, i.e., they are unskilled at appropriately detecting and responding to roadway hazards. This study evaluates two cuing systems designed to help teens better understand their driving environment. Both systems use directional color-coding to represent different levels of proximity between one’s vehicle and outside agents. The first system provides an overview of the location of adjacent objects in a head-up display in front of the driver and relies on drivers’ focal vision (focal cuing system). The second system presents similar information, but in the drivers’ peripheral vision, by using ambient lights (peripheral cuing system). Both systems were retrofitted into a test vehicle (2014 Toyota Camry). A within-subject experiment was conducted at the University of Michigan Mcity test-track facility.

Quantification of Sternum Morphomics and Injury Data

Crash safety researchers have an increased concern regarding the decreased thoracic deflection and the contributing injury causation factors among the elderly population. Sternum fractures are categorized as moderate severity injuries, but can have long term effects depending on the fragility and frailty of the occupant. Current research has provided detail on rib morphology, but very little information on sternum morphology, sternum fracture locations, and mechanisms of injury. The objective of this study is two-fold (1) quantify sternum morphology and (2) document sternum fracture locations using computed tomography (CT) scans and crash data. Thoracic CT scans from the University of Michigan Hospital database were used to measure thoracic depth, manubriosternal joint, sternum thickness and bone density. The sternum fracture locations and descriptions were extracted from 63 International Center for Automotive Medicine (ICAM) crash cases, of which 22 cases had corresponding CT scans.
